The Parable of Salt and Light
This week on Cultivate, we dove into Jesus’s teachings about being “salt and light” from Matthew 5:13–16. Charlie Loften and Abigail Boone explored how Jesus calls ordinary people—those listening on the hillside then, and us now—to bring life, hope, and goodness into the world. Together, we unpacked what it means to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world,” discussing both the historical context (why salt and light mattered so much) and how these metaphors speak to our purpose today. Rather than leaving these teachings for “super Christians,” Jesus emphasized that regular people, living out His ways with kindness, mercy, and humility, can make an extraordinary difference. We also talked honestly about the challenges of living openly for God in a way that draws attention not to ourselves, but to Him. This episode is a great opportunity to consider how your everyday actions—done with Jesus’s heart—can help others see God more clearly. Take some time this week to reflect: where can your “light” and “salt” make a difference?
